Hailing from the heart of Sydney’s West, Nomasy brings what has been missing from Australian hip-hop for too long: the sound of the streets. Delivering insightful, witty and often controversial lyrics with flawless flows and catchy hooks, this solo artist is set on carving out a new market with his unique style: “Westhop”.
Born to Palestinian refugee parents in Beirut, Nomasy and his family fled Lebanon for Australia when he was a young child to escape the civil war. Growing up in Bankstown in West Sydney, Nomasy experienced his fair share of hardship and marginalisation. As a youth, Nomasy was caught up in the crime and drugs that have ruined the lives of so many of his childhood peers. But through music, Nomasy has found a way to channel his frustrations in a positive way.
"How We Roll" is the first official single from his upcoming debut album, War of Words, which is due for release in May 2010. While most of the topics covered by the album’s lyrics are serious and hard-hitting, "How We Roll" is all about the good times. It’s a cheeky and creative look back at the parties, the mischief and, most of all, the car rides.
In "Movin' On", the laid-back beat and soulful hook, sung by Barbados native George Gill, balances Nomasy's gritty and candid lyrics portraying the harsh everyday realities that he and so many of this country's underclass struggle to overcome.
"Nu'off Sawa" is rapped in Nomasy's first tounge, Arabic. The lyrics deal with many of the issues facing young Arabs growing up in Australia and the track ends with a message of unity.
